I agree that it is really difficult to compromise with a mob who thinks what they are doing is sacred. But a huge number of people voted for Trump, and in my view the capital insurrection is just the tip of an iceberg that really needs to be understood. People feel threatened by some of the changes in society, and we need to really smart people to help try to translate these fears into language progressives understand. But I feel like progressives aren't that interested in hearing why the changes they are pushing for might really have some unintended consequences. Are you familiar with Scott Alexander's Moloch essay? Sometimes I think that the progressive march forward is feeding Moloch. Maybe it is dumb to fight progress, but we can at least recognize that progress is threatening our humanity.
